About Castle Rock

Castle Rock, Colorado is south of Denver and north of Colorado Springs. Castle Rock, first settled in the 1870s, is located in the heart of East Plum Creek Valley. Surrounded by rocky buttes and featuring stunning views of the Rocky Mountain Front Range. Castle Rock known for it’s landmark rock that’s both the size of and resembles an ancient castle. There is a hiking trail around and up to Castle Rock at Rock Park. But Castle Rock has more hiking trails in town and hidden in the surrounding countryside.

Rock Park in Castle Rock, Colorado is the trailhead for a 1.4 mile loop. You can climb this loop to the base of the town’s famous Castle Rock. Click here for the Castle Rock trail map.

Castle Rock is named for a large geological formation which looked to early travelers to the area like a castle on a hill. A special tradition has been observed in the town every Christmas since 1936. It has a 45 foot tall electric star which lights up the night in the town from the week before Thanksgiving until the end of the National Western Stock Show in January. The star has been a symbol to people in Castle Rock for over 80 years.
