Hallett Peak & Dream Lake Photos Rocky Mountain National Park

Hallett Peak & Dream Lake Photos from Rocky Mountain National Park. These photographs are the result of a follow up outing made two weeks after our initial attempt at Dream Lake. Mother nature fully cooperated this day giving us beautiful skies set against a backdrop of Hallett Peak with spring snow. These spectacular views of partially frozen Dream Lake afforded us an opportunity to capture unique images with reflections of the bow clouds that formed in the skies above. These photos of Dream Lake and Hallett Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park were taken between 6:06am and 6:50am on April 28, 2018.

Plotagraph Video of Dream Lake Rocky Mountain National Park

The video located above was created using special software. This motion graphic software utilizes a still photograph and creates animated vectors within the image file. The resulting video file is called a Plotagraph. This is similar to a Cinemagraph but uses one still image vs. using native video footage to create the final result.

Gear Used to Photograph Hallett Peak & Dream Lake at RMNP

The following camera gear was used in the Colorado Landscape Photography of Hallett Peak & Dream Lake at Rocky Mountain National Park:

  • a Nikon D850 with MB-D18 Battery Grip & Really Right Stuff L-Bracket,
  • an iPhone 7 Plus,
  • F-Stop Gear Aloe Green Tilopa 50L Back Pack (with large Pro ICU),
  • a Gitzo CF6X Mountaineer 2 tripod (GT2530),
  • with a Really Right Stuff BH-40 LR Ballhead,
  • the Nikkor AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8,
  • and a Nikkor AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8 lens.

These early spring photos were all taken on a tripod with the exception of the images taken using the iPhone. The D850 exposures for the images averaged between 1/4 of a second to 1/200 second at f/11 and f/16.  We used the D850’s native ISO of 64. On the iPhone we used auto ISO as well as Apple’s native camera App. Some of these images were created by combining several exposures at one full stop apart in Adobe Lightroom Classic CC. This HDR process was done in order to capture the high dynamic range of the scene. The black and white photo (shown at right) was created using DXO’s Nik Silver Efex Pro 2. The warm color in the B&W photo was added using split toning in Adobe Lightroom Classic CC.
