Our Castle Rock Colorado Sunset and 2017 Starlighting Photos. Castle Rock has celebrated the “Lighting of the Star” (aka Starlighting) in a community event as far back as 1936. Fireworks over the Rock have become part of this yearly event. Popularity of this event is growing as we noticed the attendance of many more photographers during the lighting of the fireworks. Eight days later we retuned to photograph the star atop “The Rock” at sundown. We were treated to a beautiful show of colors with Pink, Blue and Purple reflecting in the clouds and snow capped mountains on Colorado’s Front Range. The pink, blue and purple sunset photo illustrates why Pikes Peak and our Colorado’s mountains are referred to “purple mountain majesties” in the song “America the Beautiful”.

Gear Used to Photograph Starlighting and Sunset Photos of Castle Rock Colorado
The following camera gear was used in the Colorado Landscape Photography of Sunset in Castle Rock Colorado:
- a Nikon D850 with MB-D18 Battery Grip,
- the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens
- a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens,
- the F-Stop Gear Aloe Green Tilopa Back Pack (with large Pro ICU),
- and a Really Right Stuff BH-55 LR Ballhead and B2-AS-II quick-release clamp.
These autumn sunset photos were all taken on November 23rd using a larger tripod for added stability. The exposures for the evening sunset images averaged between 1/4 of a second to 15 seconds at f/8. We used the D850’s native ISO of 64 on these photographs. Our photos of the Castle Rock Star Lighting fireworks were captured on November 18th with an exposure of f/10 and 4-10 seconds at ISO 64. Some of these sunset images were created by combining 5-7 exposures at one full stop apart in Adobe Lightroom. This HDR process was done in order to capture the high dynamic range of the scene.
