Castle Rock Star Shining Bright Above City Christmas Eve
Twilight photograph of the Castle Rock Star shining bright on Christmas Eve. Overlooking the city of Castle Rock you can see snowy roof tops and Christmas lights glowing on the homes below as trails of shopper’s car lights illuminate I-25. Pikes Peak stands majestically in the background as the sun sets behind the Rocky Mountains. These blue and purple sunset photos illustrate why Pikes Peak and our Colorado’s mountains were referred to “purple mountain majesties” in the song “America the Beautiful”. These photos of Castle Rock Colorado were taken from a bluff overlooking the city on the evening of December 24th, 2017.

Gear Used to Photograph Twlight Photos of Castle Rock Colorado
The following camera gear was used in the Colorado Landscape Photography of the City of Castle Rock Colorado and its illuminated Star:
- a Nikon D810 with MB-D12 Battery Grip,
- Nikon D850 with MB-D18 Battery Grip,
- Think Tank Photo Digital Holster 50 v2.0,
- the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens
- a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens,
- the F-Stop Gear Aloe Green Tilopa Back Pack (with large Pro ICU),
- and a Really Right Stuff BH-55 LR Ballhead and B2-AS-II quick-release clamp.
The daytime photo was hand held while we used a larger tripod for the evening photos. The exposures for the twilight images averaged between 5 seconds to 30 seconds at f/8 to f/16. We used the D850’s native ISO of 64 on most and ISO 200 on some. Some of these images were created by combining 5 exposures at one full stop apart in Adobe Lightroom. This HDR (High Dynamic Range) process was done in order to help capture as much detail in the city lights as well as detail in the darker foreground trees.
