Colorful Sunrise Over Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado

Colorful Sunrise Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado. As we approached the scene with headlamps on, we set up our gear in anticipation of capturing a sunrise over Longs Peak. In the pre-dawn light we could barely make out a very high thin layer of clouds above. Simultaneously, a low bank of clouds began to form out of the west hugging the mountain peaks below. As so often happens in RMNP, we hoped these clouds would not obscure the peaks. Our wait was soon over and first light began to illuminate the diamond face on Longs Peak.  The sky erupted in color painting the scene before us in vivid magentas and pinks which then turned to bright yellows and oranges. These photos of Longs Peak and Upper Beaver Meadows in Rocky Mountain National Park were taken between 6:55am and 8:15am on Sunday, October 28, 2018.

These colorful sunrise landscape photos are the result of a previous location scouting trip around Upper Beaver Meadows. The following camera gear was used in the Landscape Photography of Longs Peak & Upper Beaver Meadows in Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado:

  • a Nikon D850 & Really Right Stuff L-Bracket,
  • an iPhone 10 X Max Plus,
  • F-Stop Gear Aloe Green Tilopa 50L Back Pack (with large Pro ICU),
  • a Really Right Stuff TVC 34L tripod,
  • with a Really Right Stuff BH-50 LR Ballhead,
  • and the Nikkor AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8 FL ED VR Lens.

These late October photos were all taken on the Really Right Stuff tripod. Our D850 exposures for the images averaged between 25 seconds to 1/80 of a second at f/8 and f/11.  We used the D850’s native ISO of 64. The close up photos were shot at 200mm. All images are single exposures and processed in Adobe Lightroom Classic CC and Adobe Photoshop. As a finishing touch on a few of the image we like to use Skylum’s Luminar AI feature. This gives the photos an extra pop of color and contrast.
