Sunset Photos of Castle Rock Star Pikes Peak January 2019. Overlooking the city of Castle Rock you can see snow covered roof tops and Christmas holiday lights on the homes below as trails of car lights illuminate I-25. The majestic backdrop of Pikes Peak stands prominent in these images as the sun sets behind the Rocky Mountains. The stunning yellow, blue and purple sunset photos illustrate why Pikes Peak and our Colorado’s mountains were referred to “purple mountain majesties” in the song “America the Beautiful”. These photos of Castle Rock Colorado were taken from a bluff overlooking the city on the evening of January 19 – 26, 2019.

Gear Used to Photograph Castle Rock Colorado and Pikes Peak at Sunset
The following camera gear was used in the Colorado Landscape Photography of Pikes Peak and City of Castle Rock:
- Nikon D850 with MB-D18 Battery Grip,
- Think Tank Photo Digital Holster 50 v2.0,
- a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens,
- the F-Stop Gear Aloe Green Tilopa Back Pack (with large Pro ICU),
- and a Really Right Stuff BH-55 LR Ballhead and B2-AS-II quick-release clamp.
The exposures for these sunset photos of the City of Castle Rock averaged between 1/20 of a second to 30 seconds. The f-stops indicated are f/11 to f/16. We used the D850’s native ISO of 64 on most and ISO 200 on those taken at the blue hour. Some of these images were created by combining exposures at one full stop apart in Adobe Lightroom. This HDR (High Dynamic Range) process was done in order to help capture as much detail as possible. Especially in the city lights as well as detail in the darker foreground trees.
