Photos of Chasm Lake Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado

Photos of Chasm Lake Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado: At almost 12,000 feet, this breath taking location can be only described as being other worldly. The stark rocky landscape with the diamond of Longs Peak above, makes one feel like they have arrived at another planet. As you can see in the photo gallery below this remote location is well above the tree line. These photos of Chasm Lake and Longs Peak were taken on August 1, 2019 at 5:40am to 6:22am.

Quite the Hike!

This destination is rated as difficult and strenuous by most hiking websites. We arrived at the trailhead at approximately 3am in order make make it to Chasm Lake before sunrise. There is an elevation gain of 2500 feet and the hike is almost 9 miles long round trip. On the way up just before Columbine Falls we navigated a 75 foot very narrow section of snow and ice (7 inches wide). There was a steep drop off on one side which was basically a vertical ice field with the canyon below. Last but not least was a steep scramble up a headwall to the lake which requires hand holds for the climb. The last part is especially tricky when wearing a backpack outfitted with camera gear (see photo below).

Gear Used to Photograph Chasm Lake Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado

The following camera gear was used in the Landscape Photography of Lake Isabelle Colorado Waterfalls and Streams:

Vertical Photo of Ship's Prow Rock and Chasm Lake Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado

  • a Nikon Z7 with a Really Right Stuff Modular L-Bracket,
  • F-Stop Gear Aloe Green Tilopa 50L Back Pack (with large Pro ICU),
  • a Really Right Stuff TVC-24 Mk2 Apex tripod,
  • the Series 2 Leveling Base,
  • with a Really Right Stuff BH-40 LR Ballhead,
  • and the Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S lens.

These photos were all captured using the Really Right Stuff TVC-24 Mk2 Apex tripod. The Z7 exposures for the images averaged between 5 seconds to 1/4 of a second at f/8, f/11. We used the Z7’s native ISO of 64. Most of these images were captured as a single exposure while some were created from a brackets set of exposures. The resulting 32 Bit Raw files helped to bring out the dynamic range of the scene. We also created a few panoramic images from 6 overlapping vertical photos using a focal length of 15mm. The location photos of me located below are courtesy of Thomas Mangan (a friend and amazingly talented photographer).
