Photos of Colorado Paint Mines Interpretive Park in El Paso County

Here you will find Photos from the Colorado Paint Mines Interpretive Park in El Paso County taken during a mild Autumn evening. The Colorado Paint Mines Interpretive Park in El Paso County is located near Calhan and is approximately 750 acres in size. Its is said that the paint mines have evidence of human life as far back as 9,000 years ago. The Paint Mines are named for their colorful clays that were collected by American Indians to make paint. The brightly colored bands are caused by the oxidized iron compounds, and are found in varying amounts throughout the many different layers of clay. The park features fantastic geological formations, including spires and hoodoos that form through erosion creating incised gullies, exposed layers of selenite clay and jasper. Our photos of the Colorado Paint Mines were taken on November 15, 2020 between 4:13pm and 5:15pm.

Photos Details of the Colorado Paint Mines Interpretive Park at Sunset

The following camera gear was used in the Sunset Photos of the Colorado Paint Mines Interpretive Park in El Paso County:

Brightly colored bands, caused by oxidized iron compounds at Colorado Paint Mines

  • a Nikon Z7 with a Really Right Stuff L-Bracket,
  • the iPhone 11 Pro Max,
  • F-Stop Gear Aloe Green Tilopa 50L Back Pack (with large Pro ICU),
  • a Really Right Stuff TVC 34L tripod,
  • with a Really Right Stuff BH-50 LR Ballhead,
  • a NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S lens,
  • and a NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S lens,,

These landscape photos were all taken on the Really Right Stuff TVC 34L tripod. The Z7 (with 14-24mm lens) averaged exposures between 1/6 of a second to 25 seconds at f/10. ISO of settings on the Z7 were set to the native ISO of 64. Adobe Lightroom Classic was used exclusively to process the RAW DNG files for both cameras. A few of the images were processed using multiple exposures to capture the high dynamic range of the scene (HDR). The first photo shown in the gallery uses a bit of creative processing. We added the sun rays and replaced the sky for a more dramatic look.
