Twilight Photo of Castle Rock Star with Low Lying Fog in Valley

Photos of Illuminated Castle Rock Star and Pikes Peak Above Low Lying Fog. On a bluff overlooking the city of Castle Rock you can see snow covered roof tops and Christmas holiday lights on the homes below. You can also see how the trails of car lights illuminate I-25. The stunning backdrop of Pikes Peak stands prominent in these images as the sun sets behind the Rocky Mountains. On the first outing we experienced a rare weather event called an inversion (Nov.  28th). This caused the low lying fog to settle in the valley below with the Castle Rock Star visible just above. The second photo outing had more clear and “normal” Colorado weather for this time of year (Dec. 21st). These photos of Castle Rock Colorado were taken from a bluff overlooking the city on the evening of November 28th and December 21, 2019.

Gear Used to Photograph Castle Rock Colorado and Pikes Peak

The following camera gear was used in the Colorado Landscape Photography of Pikes Peak and City of Castle Rock above the valley fog:

  • a Nikon Z7 with a Really Right Stuff L-Bracket,
  • F-Stop Gear Aloe Green Tilopa 50L Back Pack (with large Pro ICU),
  • a Really Right Stuff TVC 34L tripod,
  • with a Really Right Stuff BH-50 LR Ballhead,
  • a AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens (with Really Right Stuff tripod foot),
  • the Mount Adapter FTZ for the Nikon Z7 and 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens.

The exposures for these night time photos of the City of Castle Rock averaged between 1/8 of a second to 20 seconds. The f-stops indicated are f/8 to f/11. We used the Z7s native ISO of 64 on all of these images. The Panoramic images were created by stitching three to four overlapping horizontal photos together in Adobe Lightroom. This process was done in order to help capture the wide view of the Front Range while still zoomed in on the 70-200mm at 165 -185mm. All other images are single exposures as the Nikon Z7 has a remarkable wide dynamic range.
