Mount Chapin & Mummy Range Rocky Mountain National Park

Photos of Mount Chapin & Mummy Range in Rocky Mountain National Park. These images were taken after an earlier attempt to photograph Hallett Peak at Dream Lake. Mother nature had other plans for us this day as an unexpected  snow storm swept in at the last minute while on the trail to Dream Lake. This prompted us to return to the Bear Lake trailhead parking lot and head back down the mountain to the Beaver Meadows and Horse Shoe Park areas.  We were fortunate to be greeting with better weather as well as spectacular views of the ever changing dramatic clouds over the Mummy Range. These snow clouds created dappled light and shadows sculpting the mountain range as can be seen in these images. These photos of Mount Chapin, Fairchild Mountain and Mount Chiquita in the Mummy Range were taken between 6:30am and 9:30am on April 15, 2018.

Gear Used to Photograph Mount Chapin & Mummy Range at RMNP

The following camera gear was used in the Colorado Landscape Photography of Mount Chapin & Mummy Range in Rocky Mountain National Park:

Looking East from Beaver Meadow in RMNP at Sunrise

  • a Nikon D850 with MB-D18 Battery Grip & Really Right Stuff L-Bracket,
  • an iPhone 7 Plus,
  • F-Stop Gear Aloe Green Tilopa 50L Back Pack (with large Pro ICU),
  • Really Right Stuff TVC 34L tripod a with a BH-50 Ball Head,
  • a Gitzo CF6X Mountaineer 2 tripod (GT2530),
  • with a Really Right Stuff BH-40 LR Ballhead,
  • the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8,
  • and a Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5 – 6.3 lens.

These early spring photos were all taken on a tripod with the exception of the images taken using the iPhone. The D850 exposures for the images averaged between 1/8 of a second to 1/800 second at f/11. The focal length of the Tamron 100-400mm varied between 170mm and 400mm. We used the D850’s native ISO of 64. On the iPhone we used auto ISO as well as Apple’s native camera App. Some of these images were created by combining 5 exposures at one full stop apart in Adobe Lightroom. This HDR process was done in order to capture the high dynamic range of the light. The black and white photos were created using DXO’s Nik Silver Efex Pro. The warm color in the B&W photos was added using split toning in Adobe Lightroom CC.
