Photos of P-51 Stang Evil and Frances Dell at Colorado Springs Airshow. These photographs were taken at the Pikes Peak Regional Airshow. The P-51 Mustang is was known as the finest all-around piston-engined fighter of World War II. The aircraft is an American long-range, single-seat fighter and was used during World War II and the Korean War, among other conflicts.These photos of the 1945 North American P-51D Mustang (45-11636) – “Stang Evil” and the P-51D Mustang (44-13903) Frances Dell were taken on September 21, 2019.

The P-51D Stang Evil History

The Stang Evil aircraft was built in July 1945, and was one of the last 200 D-Models produced. After the war, it saw service with the Colorado Air National Guard in the 120th Fighter Squadron at Buckley Field in 1949, and with the 140th Fighter-Bomber Wing in 1950.

The P-51D Frances Dell History

The P-51D Mustang is show here in the colors of the “Frances Dell“ as the plane of Lt. Clark Clemmons, the 84th Fighter Squadron of the 78th Fighter Group.
The 78th Fighter Group in the 8th Air Force of the US Army with its “Checkerboard“ P51 Mustang was based at the legendary airfield RAF Duxford in Cambridgeshire / UK.
During World War II young men like Lt. Clark Clemmons or CO Lt. Col John D. Landers flew their missions throughout whole Europe from Duxford.

  • a Nikon D850 with the Nikon MB-D18 Multi Battery Power Pack,
  • F-Stop Gear Aloe Green Tilopa 50L Back Pack (with large Pro ICU),
  • a Really Right Stuff TVC 34L tripod,
  • the Movo GH800 Carbon Fiber Professional Gimbal Tripod Head with Arca-Swiss Quick-Release Plate,
  • with a Really Right Stuff BH-50 LR Ballhead,
  • a Nikkor AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4.0 lens,
  • and an AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens with a Really Right Stuff Tripod foot.

The static display photos shown here were all taken with the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4.0 lens. The in-flight photos were all taken with a Gimbal and tripod set up using the 200-500mm lens. The D850 exposures for the images average between 1/80 and 1/640 of a second at f/7.1 and f/8.0. The native ISO of settings of 64 was used on the Nikon D850 and all images captured as RAW files. We also used Adobe Lightroom Classic CC to process all of these images. Since this was a sunny blue sky day with very few clouds, we used Adobe Photoshop’s new new sky replacement feature to add clouds in most of these images.
